Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister meets Iran's President in Tehran NHK

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud arrived in Tehran on Saturday. He said his country is willing to reopen its embassy in Iran's capital.

Faisal met with his counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi. The Saudi Arabian government said Faisal delivered greetings from the Saudi king to Iran's president.

The Saudi foreign minister and the president are said to have discussed the situation in the region and other issues.

In March, the two countries agreed to normalize diplomatic relations after seven years. China brokered the agreement.

Iran reopened its embassy in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh earlier this month.

Faisal said at a news conference that he believes the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran will be reopened soon. It was closed after protesters attacked it in 2016. The attack occurred after Saudi Arabia executed a Shia Muslim cleric.

Observers say the move between the two countries could help stabilize the situation in the region.
