Police in New York are bracing for protests. They are tightening security ahead of a court appearance on Tuesday by former President Donald Trump.

A grand jury indicted Trump last week, the first time a former president has faced such accusations. The charge, or charges, against him have not been made public. But prosecutors have been investigating hush money paid to an adult film actress during his 2016 campaign.

Trump left his home in Florida to travel to New York for his arraignment. He is expected to plead "not guilty" when he appears at a courthouse in Manhattan. He is expected to be fingerprinted and could be photographed for a mug shot.

Police have strengthened their presence around Trump Tower, where Trump keeps an apartment and will spend the night. They say they are "ready to respond" to protests around the courthouse.

Trump had already announced he will run again for president next year. Some analysts say he is trying to use his legal problems to improve his political fortunes. He is expected to speak about his experience later on Tuesday when he returns to Florida.
