Protests have erupted across India against the Adani Group, one of the world's top conglomerates, after allegations that it engaged in stock manipulation and an accounting fraud scheme.
Demonstrators from the country's main opposition party took to the streets of New Delhi on Thursday, demanding an investigation. They also blamed the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for facilitating the group's activities.
New York-based Hindenburg Research reported last month that the group's misconduct spanned decades, and also included improper use of tax havens.
The Adani group has grown rapidly in recent years, led by its founder Gautam Adani. Its business areas are broad, and include ports, highways and green energy. Its chairman came from the prime minister's home state of Gujarat, and critics claim the group benefitted from their close ties.
The group denied all of the claims and described the report as malicious and based on misinformation. But investors' confidence in the group has slipped after the allegations, leading to losses estimated at over 100 billion dollars.
