The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says a magnitude 7.8 quake occurred off the east coast of Kamchatka, in the Russian Far East, at around 18:58 UTC on Thursday. It has issued a tsunami threat that hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 1,000 kilometers from the epicenter along the Russian coasts. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the quake could cause slight tidal changes along Japanese coasts. It added there is no concern for damage from the quake in the country.
