US to assess humanitarian situation in Gaza this week NHK

The United States, which is calling on Israel to improve the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, is to judge this week whether progress has been made there.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan made the remarks in an interview with CBS News, which was aired on Sunday.

He disclosed that the administration of President Joe Biden will make judgments this week about what kind of progress Israel has made to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Last month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter to the Israeli government, raising concerns over the situation in Gaza.

They urged Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, indicating that unless Israel takes steps within 30 days, the US may suspend its military assistance to the country.

On Saturday, Israel announced that trucks carrying food, water and medical supplies were brought to distribution centers in Jabalia and another spot. It also said more than 700 aid trucks were brought into the northern Gaza Strip since October.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces are continuing their offensive in the Gaza Strip. Reuters quoted Palestinian health officials and others as saying at least 40 people were killed by Israeli strikes on Sunday, including one that destroyed a residential building in Jabalia.

The Israeli military said it struck a site in Jabalia in which "terrorists were operating."
