Police in Tokyo arrest man following fatal shooting NHK

Police in Japan say they have arrested a man carrying a gun following a fatal shooting in Machida City, suburban Tokyo.

Investigative sources say he turned himself in at a police station in Kanagawa Prefecture near the capital at around 11: 30 p.m. on Friday.

He was identified as Sasaki Makoto from the prefecture. He reportedly arrived after police received a call from someone saying he would turn himself in following the shooting.

A man thought to be in his 50s was shot near JR Machida Station at around 7:30 p.m. He was confirmed dead about one and a half hours later.

Police believe the victim has links to "yakuza" mobsters. They say he appears to have been shot at least three times.

The victim is believed to have been inside a coffee shop. He reportedly tried to run away before the shooter opened fire again.

Witnesses say two people fled in a white car.

On Thursday, two police officers were killed in another shooting in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

Gun crime is on the whole very rare in the country.
