Self-Defense Force helicopter missing in southwestern Japan NHK

Japan's Defense Ministry says a Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter has disappeared from radar in the country's southwest.

Ministry officials say the UH-60JA multipurpose chopper, with 10 people on board, was flying near the island of Miyakojima in Okinawa Prefecture when it vanished from radar at around 4:33 p.m. on Thursday.

The SDF and the Coast Guard are searching for the helicopter, which belongs to a unit in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The officials say the helicopter took off from Miyakojima before 4 p.m. and was scheduled to return to the island after 5 p.m.
