Toyota Motor says it has suspended shipments of 10 vehicle models, including some popular SUVs, after finding irregularities in engine-performance certifications. The problems were uncovered in tests carried out by a group firm, Toyota Industries.
Ito Koichi, the president of the subsidiary, apologized at a news conference on Monday. He said he is very sorry for causing such a great deal of trouble.
Toyota says the models affected include the Land Cruiser 300, the Hiace and the Hilux.
The suspension comes after certification problems were found at another Toyota group firm, Daihatsu Motor. Operations at all of Daihatsu's domestic plants have been halted as a result.
