The US Defense Department says it will suspend flights of Osprey transport aircraft operated by the US Air Force in Japan, following Wednesday's fatal crash in the country's southwestern waters. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said in a statement on Friday that US soldiers' safety and Japan's regional security are the top priority for Washington. She said Ospreys belonging to the US Marine Corps and other units will be allowed to fly, but "only after undergoing thorough maintenance and safety checks." Singh said the United States and Japan are sharing information about the accident involving the CV-22 Osprey, which was carrying eight crew when it went down off Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. Authorities have recovered the body of one crew member. The other seven are still missing. The statement comes after the Japanese government asked the US side on Thursday to ground all Japan-based US Ospreys, except for search and rescue missions, until confirming they are safe to fly.
