Japan's Emperor Emeritus Akihito marked his 91st birthday on Monday with celebrations at his residence at the Akasaka Estate in central Tokyo.
He received congratulations from Imperial family members, as well as officials from the Imperial Household Agency and the Imperial Guard.
Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko did not attend the celebrations because the princess is unwell.
The Imperial Household Agency says the health of the Emperor Emeritus has been relatively stable, with no major changes. He was diagnosed with heart failure in 2022.
