LDP policy chief calls for closer coordination among Japan, Taiwan and US NHK

The policy chief of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party has called for closer coordination among Japan, Taiwan and the United States, as China steps up military pressure on Taiwan.

Hagiuda Koichi made the call when he spoke at a gathering in Taiwan on Sunday.

He referred to remarks by former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo that a contingency involving Taiwan is a contingency for Japan and the Japan-US alliance.

Hagiuda noted that Japan plans to drastically enhance its defense capabilities within five years, raising defense and related spending to a level similar to NATO countries -- about two percent or more of the GDP.

The LDP executive said members of his party are looking at ways to secure stable revenue sources, including raising taxes. But he said using funds earmarked for government bond redemption could also be an option.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has told ruling coalition lawmakers to consider raising taxes to cover the increase in defense spending.

Hagiuda is the first LDP executive to visit Taiwan in 19 years.
