An annual international hula competition was held Saturday on the Hawaiian island of Maui, which was hit last month by devastating wildfires.
The organizer went ahead with the event to boost the spirits of the islanders following the fires that destroyed the historic town of Lahaina and killed 115 people.
The annual competition usually lasts two days, but this year's event was shortened to one day due to participants' cancellations.
Two local groups from Maui, one from the Hawaiian island of Kauai, and three from Japan took part.
One group from Maui that included a mother and her daughter who lost their home in Lahaina, gave a performance on the theme of Lahaina mythology.
Their performance brought cheers and applause from the audience.
The 41-year-old mother said she was overwhelmed by emotions, but she felt she was able to express herself on stage.
Her 16-year-old daughter said she was confident her group conveyed what kind of place their hometown Lahaina is, and the story behind it.
