Boeing to build next-generation fighter jet for US Air Force NHK

US President Donald Trump has announced that aerospace giant Boeing will build the Air Force's next-generation fighter jet. The 47th president says the warplane will be called the F-47.

Trump made the announcement alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Washington on Friday. He said, "The F-47 will be the most advanced, most capable, most lethal aircraft ever built."

He added that the plane will have stealth capabilities and that an experimental version has been conducting test flights for about five years.

The Associated Press reports that the jet will serve as "quarterback" to a fleet of drones designed to penetrate the air defenses of China and other potential enemies.

Boeing has been hit hard by a series of plane accidents and worker strikes. Reuters reports that the contract, which is worth hundreds of billions of dollars, will have a lifetime of multiple decades.
