Japan is preparing for a series of so-called two-plus-two meetings with India and Australia. The talks feature foreign ministers and defense chiefs. Leaders in Tokyo aim to boost ties with both nations in light of China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific. They want to send Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko and Defense Minister Kihara Minoru to India sometime around August 20. The discussions will likely focus on ways to achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law. They are also expected to discuss joint exercises between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and Indian military, and Tokyo's provision of defense equipment to India. The talks with Australia will likely take place early next month. An agreement aimed at facilitating joint drills between the JSDF and Australian military came into force last year. The planned meeting will likely see the two sides agree to deepen cooperation under the pact. Japan, the United States, Australia and India are known as the Quad nations. Kamikawa met her counterparts late last month. Tokyo and Washington also held two-plus-two talks around the same time.
