1. Instagram Threads, a competitor to X, is now offering group messaging for up to 50 users starting from October 16th. This new feature will be available globally and also in the EU where it was initially delayed.

2. Within these group chats, users can share text posts, videos, GIFs, and emojis, similar to the public timeline. However, unlike encrypted messages, Threads views this feature as a way for people to connect about shared interests rather than secure communication.

3. Instagram is refocusing its app around Reels and DMs, making messaging a core part of the Threads app too. This move follows similar changes by X, but with a focus on end-to-end encrypted chat service, XChat, which has been questioned for security compared to Signal. Users will have control over who can start group chats with them and can give their chats a name, making it easier to connect within specific communities.
