Taiwan has conducted its first live-fire drills of this year based on its policy of holding more missile and rocket launch exercises amid the Chinese military's increased activities in the area. Taiwan's army carried out the drills on Tuesday at a base in the southern county of Pingtung, facing the Pacific Ocean. The drills were not shown to media. But an NHK crew shot scenes in which a total of 60 live bullets were fired using the Thunderbolt-2000 artillery multiple-launch rocket system mounted on three vehicles. Taiwan independently developed the system for anti-landing combat capabilities. It is already deployed by the army. Previously, Taiwan's military conducted live-fire missile and rocket drills at specific times of the year. But it has decided to hold more such exercises from this year to counter China's activities around Taiwan. Taiwan has been promoting an "asymmetric warfare" strategy to deter enemies with massive military prowess by using highly maneuverable equipment. It aims to improve its ability to precisely strike targets to deter China from using force.
