Sunday marks three weeks since the government of President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in Syria. Attention is focused on if nation-building efforts by the interim authorities can lead to stability in the country. The interim government on Saturday announced that Syria's security institution will be reorganized after all current security entities are dissolved and restructured. Under the autocratic rule of the Assad regime, which was in power for more than half a century, security agencies were responsible for monitoring the public and cracking down on anti-government protests. International human rights organizations condemned them for human rights violations. Saturday's announcement follows an agreement by Syrian rebel groups to disband and merge under the defense ministry. The interim government is apparently aiming to break away from the Assad regime by reorganizing security services, as well as the military. But it is facing the challenge of promoting nation-building while containing backlash from supporters of the former government. There have been a series of clashes, including an attack by these supporters, which reportedly killed 14 security personnel of the interim authorities.
