Japanese police have arrested a 21-year-old Ground Self-Defense Force member on suspicion of killing a man in his 80s. They quote the suspect as saying he randomly assaulted the victim, who was not his acquaintance. Police say Mizushima Yukito repeatedly and fatally stabbed the back of the 82-year-old man in the western city of Kyoto on December 3. The suspect is stationed at a GSDF post near the city. But police detained Mizushima in Tokyo on Sunday. They say they found a kitchen knife in his backpack at the time. They believe he stabbed the victim with it. The GSDF informed police that Mizushima had been missing since he left base the day of the killing.
