The Israeli military says it has resumed military operations against Islamic group Hamas in the Gaza Strip after a seven-day pause in fighting. The military announced on social media shortly past 7 a.m. on Friday, local time, after the pause had expired, that "Hamas violated the operational pause, and in addition, fired toward Israeli territory. The IDF has resumed combat." About one hour before the expiration, it had posted that "following sirens that sounded in communities near Gaza, the IDF Aerial Defense Array successfully intercepted a launch from Gaza." About 30 minutes after declaring the resumption of combat, the military said air force fighter jets were attacking Hamas targets. Internal affairs officials in Gaza also said shortly after the pause expired that Israeli airstrikes were ongoing at multiple locations, including Gaza City in the north and near Khan Younis in the south. During the pause, Hamas freed 105 Israeli and foreign hostages. Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners in exchange. Qatar, Egypt and the United States worked until the last moment to extend the pause, but to no avail. The resumption of fighting could deteriorate the already dire humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave. Health authorities in Gaza said on Friday that the Israeli military killed 14 people and wounded dozens of others during the first two hours after the pause expired, with most of the victims being women and children.
