NHK has learned that Japan's Imperial Household Agency will start sending out information next month through Instagram.

This will be the first time for the agency to pass on information on the Imperial Family to the public through social media.

Sources say the agency has decided to create the official account of the photo sharing app Instagram.

The agency set up the Public Relations Office last April to strengthen information dissemination, appointing personnel from the private sector. It has since been fully revamping its website, and considering using a social medial platform.

It plans to start posting images of activities by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. It will also consider expanding the scope of photos and posting videos in the future.
