US: North Korea shipped weapons to help Russian forces NHK

The US says it's confirmed suspicions about a concerning source of weapons for Russian forces in Ukraine.

The White House says the private Russian military company "the Wagner Group" has received a shipment of arms from North Korea.

US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said " Last month, North Korea delivered infantry rockets and missiles into Russia for use by Wagner. We assessed that the amount of material delivered to Wagner will not change battle field dynamics in Ukraine. But we are certainly concerned that North Korea is planning to deliver more military equipment."

American officials are warning Pyongyang against selling more weapons. They accused the country of violating a UN Security Council resolution.

They also slammed the Wagner group for its expanding role in Ukraine.

The company has deployed 50,000 personnel to the conflict, including 40,000 convicts from Russian prisons. The group's owner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

News reports say he's denied the allegations about the arms shipments.

Meanwhile North Korea's state-run media says the Foreign Ministry called the claims "groundless". It denounced the US for providing what it called lethal weapons to Ukraine.
