An Iranian woman who fights to promote human rights and freedom was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. Narges Mohammadi created a resistance movement called &quot;Woman, Life, Freedom.&quot; She is currently in prison.
                
Members of the Nobel committee said Mohammadi has kept up her activism despite &quot;tremendous personal cost.&quot; They added that Iranian authorities have arrested her 13 times and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison.
                
Mohammadi told US media outlets that the award will make her more &quot;resilient&quot; and &quot;hopeful.&quot; She added that she will continue to fight against Iran&#039;s &quot;oppressive religious government.&quot;
                
Mohammdi&#039;s son, Ali Rahmani, spoke with reporters after the announcement. He said, &quot;My mother is in prison right now not just for the Iranian people and her country, but also for us children. I&#039;m grateful and very proud of her.&quot;
                
Mohammadi continues to lend her support to other Iranian women. Protesters have fought against laws mandating the hijab after a woman was arrested last year for not wearing the headscarf properly and died in custody.
                
UN officials have expressed their concern. Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq told reporters: &quot;The secretary-general said that today&#039;s Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Narges Mohammadi is an important reminder that the rights of woman and girls are facing a strong pushback.&quot;
                
However, Iran&#039;s Foreign Ministry condemned the Nobel committee. It said the decision is &quot;biased&quot; and &quot;politically motivated.&quot; It also said that the committee is in line with the anti-Iranian policies of some European governments.
