The US Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, says the US military is preparing to provide support in the wake of the massive earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula on Monday. Emanuel said in a social media post on Friday, "The US is here to support our friend and ally in its earthquake response. Military logistical support, food and other supplies are being readied." The US Embassy in Tokyo also announced on Friday that it will provide emergency aid worth 100,000 dollars, to the disaster-hit areas. It said the aid package, which includes blankets, drinking water and medical supplies, will be delivered through the non-governmental organization Peace Winds Japan. The Japanese and US governments are assessing the needs of the disaster-hit areas. The US forces in Japan say they remain ready to support the country during this difficult time. In 2011, the US military extended support to Japan following the massive quake and tsunami that hit the country's northeastern region on March 11. At that time, about 20,000 US troops took part in "Operation Tomodachi," one of their largest ever relief missions. Tomodachi means friend in Japanese. The US dispatched about 20 vessels for that operation, including the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Troops helped rebuild an airport and airlift relief supplies to disaster-hit areas.
