A ceasefire between two rival forces in Sudan is doing little to stop the bloodshed that began earlier this month. The truce was extended for 72 hours from Friday midnight, but local media say intermittent clashes have continued in the capital and other areas. The health ministry says 512 people have now died as a result of fierce fighting between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 15. Military officials said on Friday that they had repelled an attack near the capital Khartoum and seized weapons. A senior RSF official said in a video that they were armed and fighting on the battlefield. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Friday that hundreds of thousands of people have been forced from their homes. The agency also said that thousands remain trapped in residential areas amid heavy fighting.
