LA wildfires still pose serious threat 1 week on NHK

One week has passed since massive, deadly wildfires broke out in the US state of California. At least 24 people have died and about 88,000 people remain under evacuation orders. Relief efforts are continuing.

In Altadena, north of the city of Los Angeles, a large section of a residential neighborhood in the mountains has been burned. Dozens of officers are searching for missing people.

Citizens and businesses have been donating supplies to help those affected.

In Pasadena, large shipments of bottled water are being delivered due to concerns that tap water in disaster-hit areas may be contaminated. Other essentials, like diapers and paper towels, are also in high demand.

The National Weather Service has issued a "particularly dangerous situation" warning for parts of Los Angeles and nearby areas, saying strong winds are expected until Wednesday.
