Ex-lawmaker Sonoura fined for underreporting political fund NHK

NHK has learned that former Lower House member Sonoura Kentaro received an order from the Tokyo Summary Court to pay a fine of one million yen, or around 7,500 dollars, as well as a suspension of civil rights for three years.

Tokyo prosecutors took the action last Thursday, asking a summary court to impose fines or other penalties on former Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Sonoura and two of his former secretaries.

The three are accused of failing to record the equivalent of around 300,000 dollars in revenues from fund-raisers in political funds reports of a political group and an LDP chapter both headed by Sonoura in the three years through 2020. The prosecution regards the case as a violation of the Political Funds Control Law.

The law sets the period of civil rights suspension on a charge of making false statements at five years in principle. But the summary court shortened the period to three years.

If the court order is finalized, Sonoura would not be allowed to run for any elections for the next three years.
