Protests by Indian farmers against the government for failing to fulfill its promises have entered their second week. The protesters are demanding that the government honor a pledge to guarantee minimum prices for most of their crops. Dozens of farmers in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh tied up traffic on Monday after they drove their tractors onto an expressway. But their rally was cut short when security forces moved in. It was part of a massive campaign organized by agricultural groups to march on the capital New Delhi. The farmers are demanding guaranteed prices for their crops which would allow them to sell most of their produce at fixed rates. They also want the government to fulfil its promise of doubling farmer's income. In the past two weeks, one protester has died and several others were injured in clashes with security forces. The protests come just months ahead of national elections in which the party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third consecutive term in office.
