China has started investigating US chip giant Nvidia over alleged violations of anti-monopoly laws. The move comes after Washington tightened restrictions on semiconductor-related exports to the country last week. Beijing's market regulators said on Monday that Nvidia is suspected of violating commitments it made when it purchased Israel-based Mellanox Technologies. Nvidia obtained clearance from Chinese authorities to acquire the high-speed communications firm in 2020. The chipmaker could face hefty fines if the allegations are proven. US-China disputes over control of the development of key technologies have intensified in recent weeks. Washington unveiled on December 2 new export curbs on equipment and software for developing and making semiconductors. Beijing hit back the following day with export bans on some minerals such as gallium and antimony, which are important for making chips. The Wall Street Journal says "By taking aim at one of the most valuable US companies, China is sending a message to American policymakers ahead of the second Trump administration that it is ready to respond to US actions."
