Attacks intensify in northern Gaza as fighting continues in south NHK

The Israeli military is increasing its attacks in the city of Jabalia in northern Gaza. This comes amid its ongoing offensive in Rafah. Large numbers of people are currently taking refuge in and around the southern city.

Israel officials said earlier that they had taken control of Jabalia. But they say the military operation resumed, after Hamas fighters gathered again in the area. Qatari media outlet Al Jazeera reported on Saturday that at least 28 people have been killed. It said women and children are among the victims.

Israel also says it carried out what it calls targeted attacks in Rafah against Hamas militants. It notes 80 of the fighters were killed. Palestinian media outlets reported on Saturday that two civilians were killed in an airstrike.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees estimates more than 630,000 people have been forced to evacuate.

Meanwhile, the White House national security advisor is set to meet with the Israeli prime minister and other officials on Sunday. Jake Sullivan will try to dissuade Israel from pursuing a massive ground operation in Rafah.

US President Joe Biden has threatened to cut off weapons supplies to Israel, if it goes ahead with the operation. But the Israeli side has announced it is sending additional troops to Rafah.
