A popular department store in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward is closing down for good on Tuesday. The closure of the 55-year-old store is part of an ongoing redevelopment project in Shibuya. Tokyu Department Store Company's flagship store has served as a symbol of Shibuya since its opening in 1967. It boasts a wide collection of luxurious items to serve wealthy residents of nearby neighborhoods and other shoppers. Along with the adjacent Bunkamura cultural complex, which opened in 1989, the outlet also has been recognized as a center of cutting-edge culture and fashion. If all goes as planned, a new 36-story complex with four below-ground floors will emerge on the site in fiscal 2027. The new building will house shops on lower floors, a high-end hotel in the middle and apartments on upper floors. The company plans to increase the number of items being sold at other nearby outlets and ramp up e-commerce operations to make up for the closure.
