More than 50 civilians have been killed in Sudan as the country's army and a paramilitary group are engaged in fierce combat. Heavy clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, erupted in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere on Saturday. Local media report that gunfire was also exchanged in northern cities on Sunday, and military jets struck RSF bases. A local doctors' group says more than 50 civilians have been killed and about 600 people, including combatants, have been wounded. The army has been controlling the country since a coup in October 2021. But negotiations are underway to reorganize the military and form a civilian-led government. RSF is reportedly opposed to how the transition of power will be carried out. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on social media condemned the outbreak of the fighting. He also reaffirmed the UN commitment to support Sudanese people in their efforts for a democratic transition. But clashes could escalate further as both sides are signaling they will continue fighting.
