Japan's Defense Ministry says Chinese military aircraft locked radar onto Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets southeast of Okinawa's main island on Saturday, prompting Tokyo to lodge a strong protest.
According to the ministry, the Chinese aircraft intermittently locked radar onto the ASDF jets on two occasions, once in the afternoon and again in the evening.
No damage or injuries were reported.
Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro called the incidents "extremely regrettable." He said Japan has lodged a strong protest with the Chinese side and urged Beijing to take steps to prevent a recurrence.
