US President Donald Trump has held talks with Jensen Huang, the CEO of US semiconductor giant Nvidia. The two reportedly discussed chip export controls. Trump told reporters on Friday that he met with Huang for the first time and it was a good meeting. Nvidia told NHK, "We appreciated the opportunity to meet with President Trump and discuss semiconductors and AI policy. Jensen and the president discussed the importance of strengthening US technology and AI leadership." Reuters reports that issues Trump and Huang discussed included restrictions around AI chip exports. The previous US administration of President Joe Biden limited exports of advanced chips to prevent China and some other countries from using them for military purposes. But Nvidia has argued that new export rules proposed in January are too strict, and is urging the Trump administration to review them. Meanwhile, media reports say US officials are investigating whether Chinese generative AI startup DeepSeek bought Nvidia chips through third parties, to avoid US restrictions. Amid intensifying competition with China over AI and semiconductor technology, there are calls in the US for tighter export controls. Attention is on how Trump responses.
