Former Japanese prime minister Kishida Fumio and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have agreed to push forward a concept laid out for the Asia region to achieve both carbon neutrality and economic growth at the same time. Kishida and a group of lawmakers in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party met President Prabowo in Jakarta on Sunday. The concept called Asia Zero Emission Community, or AZEC, was proposed by the former Japanese prime minister while he was in office. It is an 11-member group including Japan, Southeast Asian countries and Australia. At the meeting, Kishida and Prabowo agreed to cooperate in the promotion of the concept. The two sides also discussed the global economy. They confirmed that their countries will work together to maintain and strengthen a rules-based free and open international order, as well as the multilateral free trade system. Kishida told reporters after the talks that the two sides discussed the possible impact of the US tariff policy as well as US-China row over it on the global economy and the multilateral trade system. He said Indonesia is an important partner which shares fundamental values and principles, and that he hopes to work together in creating an international order for peace and prosperity.
