Israel and the Islamic group Hamas remained at odds over moving to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal even as the six-week-long first phase came to a close on Saturday. The second phase would see the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, aiming for a permanent end to the fighting. Hamas is seeking an immediate transition to the second phase while Israel is reluctant, saying that withdrawing its military would lead to the rearming of Hamas. Israel wants to extend the first phase of the ceasefire by another six weeks to allow for the release of more hostages. The ceasefire will likely be maintained while negotiators and mediators continue to talk intermittently. But in Israel, there are reportedly strong calls for resuming the fighting. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa visited Egypt on Saturday and met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. The two officials discussed a plan to rebuild Gaza without the displacement of Palestinians. The plan is expected to be presented at a summit of the League of Arab States scheduled for Tuesday. Earlier, US President Donald Trump proposed that the United States "own" Gaza and its residents be moved elsewhere.
