China is urging the United States and Russia to take the lead in reducing nuclear weapons, in response to US President Donald Trump's call for arms reduction. Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that he wants to meet Chinese and Russian leaders to discuss reducing nuclear weapons. Trump also said he would propose that all three countries cut their military budgets. In response to Trump's remarks, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters on Friday that it is widely recognized that the US and Russia possess most of the world's nuclear weapons. He argued that as the countries with the largest nuclear arsenals, the US and Russia should fulfill their special responsibility and substantively reduce their nuclear stockpiles and create the conditions for other nuclear powers to join the nuclear disarmament process. As for cuts in defense expenditure, Guo pointed out that US military spending is the largest in the world. He said, "The US advocates for 'America First,' then it should set an example by prioritizing reductions in military spending."
