Three members of a pro-democracy group in Hong Kong have staged a demonstration to protest the government's plan to introduce new security legislation. The protesters, who are part of the League of Social Democrats, rallied outside the Hong Kong government building on Tuesday. The government plans to enact the legislation to prohibit offenses including stealing state secrets and espionage. The three activists said the definition of state secrets is too broad, and that the government should strike a balance between state security and human rights. They handed documents expressing their opinions to government officials. It is rare a rally like this one is held in Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong introduced the National Security Law in 2020, authorities have strictly cracked down on protests against the government and the Chinese Communist Party. Before the rally, more than 20 plainclothes police officers surrounded the three demonstrators and checked their belongings. One of the participants said what's scariest is that all of Hong Kong is gripped by fear. She said people used to criticize authorities in public, but now few speak out even if they are dissatisfied.
