Israel launches new military operation in West Bank, drawing UN concern NHK

Israeli forces have launched a new military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, after a six-week ceasefire began in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated on Wednesday that Israel will continue the attacks, calling the move a "powerful operation to eliminate terrorists and terrorist infrastructure."

In response, a UN official engaged in the Palestinian issue expressed concern.

Francesca Albanese, special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory, said in a social media post, "If it is not forced to stop, Israel's genocide of Palestinians will not be confined to Gaza."

Meanwhile, local media reported some people were killed and wounded in Israeli attacks in Gaza. But the ceasefire agreement appears to be basically observed as no large-scale fighting has been reported.

Local health authorities said the death toll in the enclave has climbed to 47,107 as of Tuesday, since the current conflict started in October 2023. They said 68 dead bodies were retrieved from the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli forces.
