Russia: Two strategic bombers flew over Sea of Japan NHK

Russia's defense ministry has announced that its long-range strategic bombers flew over international waters in the Sea of Japan.

The ministry on Tuesday released a video that shows two Tupolev-95 aircraft conducting a regular flight, saying they were escorted by Sukhoi-35 fighter jets and the flight lasted for about seven hours.

The ministry also said the flight was carried out in strict accordance with international law.

It added that pilots regularly fly "over the neutral waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, Black and Baltic Seas and Pacific Ocean."

The announcement was made on the day Russian President Vladimir Putin started his visit to Beijing.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also in China. He is scheduled to visit North Korea from Wednesday.

Some observers believe Russia flew the strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons to keep Japan and the United States in check, as the two countries are at odds with Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
