A problem with Japan's interbank data communication system caused delays in money transfers at 11 financial institutions, including MUFG Bank and Resona Bank, for a second day in a row. The system glitch with the Japanese Banks' Payment Clearing Network first occurred on Tuesday morning. The network operator took steps to enable money transfers by other means, but warned that processing could be slower than usual. On Wednesday, it said it aims to resume normal operations at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at the start of the business day. MUFG Bank stopped accepting transfer orders to other financial institutions at its counters, ATMs and online by noon on Wednesday. For customers who were in a hurry to send money, the bank advised using other financial institutions, because even if transfer orders were submitted before noon, the money wouldn't be delivered until the evening. The government-backed Shoko Chukin Bank, which funds small and mid-sized businesses, also suspended counter, ATM and online transfers to other financial institutions. If the impact of the system glitch were to persist for an extended period, wage payments and remittances to businesses could be delayed. The network operator has apologized for the inconvenience.
