A group of children in western Japan have gathered to try out their hand-made kites in a competition. About 60 people, including school kids and their parents, attended the 48th annual kite-flying event in the city of Arida, Wakayama Prefecture on Saturday. The participants' kites were adorned with images of snakes and various marine creatures. The snake is the Japanese zodiac sign for 2025. The contestants were judged on how good their kites were and how high they could go. Because there was only a moderate breeze blowing at the time of the event, the children had to run fast in order to get their kites airborne. One five-year-old boy gave his kite, and the snake he had drawn on it, a rating of 9 out of 10. Another elementary school boy said he had to run as fast as he could, and that he was really happy when he eventually saw his kite soar into the sky.
