South Korea has said Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his wife Yuko will make a two-day visit to the country from Sunday. The South Korean presidential office made the announcement on Tuesday. Officials noted that the trip will be the first bilateral visit to South Korea by a Japanese leader since Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko went in 2011. The announcement came after Kishida told reporters earlier that he plans to travel to South Korea for talks with President Yoon Suk-yeol. The presidential office said Kishida's visit will mark the resumption of so-called shuttle diplomacy between the leaders of the two countries. South Korean government sources said many issues are pending between Tokyo and Seoul, but that security and economic cooperation now matter most. They said main items on the agenda are expected to include ways to deal with North Korea. The South Korean government also said the Secretary General of Japan's National Security Secretariat, Akiba Takeo, will pay a two-day visit to Seoul from Wednesday. He will meet with South Korea's National Security Adviser Cho Tae-yong. The two officials are expected to discuss preparations for the summit meeting. They will also hold an economic security dialogue to exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation in supply chains, cutting-edge technologies and other fields. Kishida and Yoon agreed to launch the dialogue when they met in Japan in March.
