Weather officials in Japan are warning that torrential rain may heighten the risks of disasters in the southern parts of the Izu Islands from the afternoon to late at night on Tuesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency says warm humid air is flowing into a stationary front near the islands and is expected to make atmospheric conditions extremely unstable in the southern parts of the islands. Localized downpours of 80 millimeters an hour accompanied by lightning are forecast for the area. Bands of clouds that cause torrential rain may form from Tuesday afternoon to late at night and rapidly raise the risks of disasters. Up to 200 millimeters of rainfall are forecast for the 24 hours until Wednesday morning in the area. Eighty millimeters are forecast for the 24 hours until Thursday morning. The precipitation could increase if bands of heavy rain clouds form. Winds will pick up in the area, due to a rising pressure gradient and the seas will be stormy, with 5-meter-high waves. Some parts of the area have been rebuilding after being hit by two consecutive typhoons earlier this month. People are advised to stay alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas and rising or overflowing rivers. Caution is also urged against high waves, lightning strikes and sudden gusts of wind.
