Ukraine foreign minister urges EU to open accession negotiations NHK

Ukraine's foreign minister has urged EU leaders to give his country the green light for membership talks at a summit later this week, saying his country has carried out all the reforms demanded by the bloc.

Dmytro Kuleba was speaking to reporters on Monday, before attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Belgium.

Kuleba said Ukraine did its homework, and that his country now expects the EU to do its homework. He said Ukraine has passed legislation related to anti-corruption measures and protection of the rights of minorities.

But Hungary has been opposed to starting the accession talks, saying it's too early because the effects of Ukraine joining the EU have yet to be fully examined. Other EU members are asking Hungary to change its stance.

The office of Hungary's prime minister said Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told his EU counterparts on Monday that his country won't yield to any pressure. He said Ukraine hasn't met all the necessary conditions.
