Biden appeals to Black voters in key swing state of Georgia NHK

US President Joe Biden has appealed for support from young and Black voters at a commencement speech in Georgia, one of the key swing states in November's presidential election.

Biden addressed graduates at Morehouse College in Atlanta on Sunday. The college was the alma mater of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.

Biden said his administration has been providing huge financial support to universities with large enrollments of Black students since he took office.

He also referred to the Gaza conflict and his administration's response, which has been criticized by many young people.

He said, "I've been working on a deal as we speak, working around the clock to lead an international effort to get more aid into Gaza, rebuild Gaza."

About 150 protesters gathered near the college to call for a halt to US military assistance to Israel.

One of the protesters said Biden is giving Israel weapons that are being used to kill innocent people in Gaza and is also providing them with aid.
