Japan firms weigh options in face of US tariffs NHK

US tariffs have left Japanese businesses facing tough choices.

Shata Brewery, a centuries-old sake maker in the central prefecture of Ishikawa, exports several of its products to the US.

At the end of last year, the firm began selling bottles labeled for overseas consumers to grow its sales channels.

But since April 5, an additional 10 percent tariff has been levied on shipments to America.

As one employee put it, "Not everything is clear about President Trump's tariff measures, so it's difficult to decide what action to take."

Japanese automakers are also rethinking their production plans. That's because a 25 percent duty has taken effect on automobiles.

Honda Motor will shift manufacturing of hybrid sedans for the US market from a plant near Tokyo to one in Indiana.

Nissan Motor has scrapped a plan to cut production at its plant in Tennessee and will keep output at the current level.
