China steps up diplomatic efforts in the region NHK

The Japan-China top level diplomatic meeting comes as the Chinese government has been trying to smooth relations not only with Japan, but with other nations in the region including India.

In October, China held its first summit with India in five years to address territorial issues and other concerns. The two agreed this month on a six-point plan aimed at maintaining stability along their border and developing bilateral ties.

Australia has seen a warming of relations with China, too. The countries had been at odds since the COVID-19 pandemic, when Beijing imposed additional tariffs and import restrictions over a wide range of Australian products.
But with an agreement to resume Australian lobster shipments in October, most of the Chinese measures have now been lifted.

China's overtures to some of its neighbors are seen as a strategy ahead of the return of Donald Trump as US president. Beijing is girding for a tougher stance from Washington after Trump is sworn in next month.

China's continued economic slowdown may be another factor behind the increased diplomatic efforts.
