UNICEF says children in Myanmar face "unprecedented risk" from the civil war and climate disasters in their country. June Kunugi, UNICEF regional director for East Asia and the Pacific, told NHK that as well as having to deal with trauma, children are increasingly vulnerable to disease, malnutrition and the effects of poor sanitation. "Their chance for a regular childhood is just eroding away to almost nothing," she said. Kunugi said more than 3.4 million people have been displaced since the junta seized power in 2021, with nearly 40 percent of them minors. UNICEF says at least 650 children have been killed or maimed in violence this year alone. Children and families have also experienced severe climate events. Massive flooding in September is estimated to have affected more than 600,000 people. Kunugi stressed more international aid is urgently needed for children in Myanmar.
