Ukrainian forces continue to press ahead in their counteroffensive on at least three fronts in eastern and southern Ukraine to recapture Russian-seized territory. Ukraine's deputy defense minister, Hanna Maliar, said on Thursday that Ukrainian troops have advanced more than 3 kilometers to the east. She also said they are advancing gradually in the south. The US think tank Institute for the Study of War said in its analysis as of Thursday that "Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations in at least three directions and reportedly made gains." The institute said Ukrainian troops have reportedly advanced around Bakhmut in the eastern region of Donetsk, in western Donetsk and the western part of the southern region of Zaporizhzhia. In Zaporizhzhia, Russian General-Major Sergei Goryachev was reportedly killed on June 12. The British defense ministry said in its update on Friday that Goryachev was "almost certainly killed in a strike on a command post on or around" Monday. The ministry said Goryachev is the first Russian general confirmed killed in Ukraine since the start of the year. The Ukrainian military admits they are facing fierce Russian attacks to counter their progress. Ukraine's army commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, warned on social media on Friday that Russian forces continue to transfer elements of their most combat-capable units toward Bakhmut. In the Russian city of St. Petersburg, President Vladimir Putin will deliver a speech on Friday at an annual international economic forum. Business leaders and politicians from Western nations are absent from the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum for a second straight year. Putin is likely to stress his stance against Western countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia and stepped up their support to Ukraine. On Friday, he met with the president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is attending the forum. They exchanged views on economic cooperation and the situation in Ukraine. Putin is scheduled to meet leaders from African nations on Saturday in an apparent effort to strengthen Russian ties with emerging and developing economies.
