A senior member of a pro-Ukraine group comprised of Russian volunteer fighters has told NHK that more and more people have been applying to join his organization, since the private Russian military force the Wagner Group staged an uprising last month. The Wagner Group is led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. In an online interview with NHK on Saturday, the Liberty of Russia Legion's deputy commander, who calls himself "Caesar," said Prigozhin's mutiny was a failure, but that it awoke the fighting spirit of many. He indicated that the rebellion has encouraged many Russians, who are against President Vladimir Putin's administration. The deputy commander also said no Wagner troops have been seen on the ground since the revolt. He said this is a big deal, as Wagner was the most useful tool in Russia's arsenal. He said the combat capabilities of Russia's forces could ultimately be weakened, if Wagner's troops do not return to the battlefield. The deputy also commented on the Legion's fight in the Belgorod region in western Russia. The Legion entered the battle in May. "Caesar" said the mission has already been accomplished. He added that the fighters are now back in Ukraine. One purpose of the mission, he said, was to attack the enemy's rear units. But the deputy expressed concern about the counteroffensives that are being conducted by Ukraine's forces. He said the Ukrainians are struggling, as they do not have air supremacy. He added that the Ukrainians are losing their surveillance drones at an extremely high rate. He stressed the need for more assistance, including air defense systems and fighter planes. The deputy commander said the Liberty of Russia Legion is currently using drones to conduct surveillance. He also said the Legion will continue to help the Ukrainian forces with their counteroffensives. The deputy said the Liberty of Russia Legion will return to Russia, if Ukraine successfully takes back its territory. He stressed that the Legion is intent on fighting against Putin's administration.
